Perhaps the most functional example
of his music was the concerts he has performed. These began with Bastille Day
1979 at the Place de la Concorde and involved a huge laser, fireworks and light
shows watched by one million at the event and millions more on television. Epic
concerts which allowed the showing off of pyrotechnics and technology in music
creation were typical of a number of other performers in the eighties (e.g.
Tomita) during the eighties. To some extent these overblown events lost their
way in the pursuit of stage managed events, which all too often tried to recreate
a meticulously crafted sound layer which was often more regularly experienced
in more solitude with greater chemical stimulus.
'Musique pour Supermarche' was a single pressing of a LP that was auctioned on July 6 1983 on radio Luxembourg and played once for the only opportunity for the public to hear it. The LP sold for 10,000 francs to an anonymous bidder.
Jarre has also developed his style to incorporate sampled and 'found' sounds with the music. Examples of this are the ambient sounds on Magnetic Fields (train and train station sounds) and language and voice on Zoolook (which also featured Laurie Anderson).
In 1997 Jarre returned to his roots (and much of his original equipment) to release the album Oxygene 7-13, the follow up to his first successful release. This was used as a basis for much of the input in Odyssey Through 02' an album of remixes by the likes of Loop Guru, Apollo 440 and Tetsuya Komuro.
