Post-rock drones I have known and loved. Labradford are a band that I have only recently had the pleasure of discovering.
As I have only recently found out about Labradford, some of this info might open to revision.
Hailing form Virginia in the US, this 3 piece group consist of bassist Robert Donne, guitarist/vocalist Mark Nelson, and Carter Brown on keyboards. Their music is labelled as post-rock ambient / experimental. To me, there is a lot of ambience and landscape in the tracks, a huge amount of depth that stands up to repeated listening. Drones feature prominently in the CDs I have managed to track down so far.
Minimalism in the music is also evident which manages to convey a starkness that reflects wide open spaces and trees without leaves. Labradford have apparently also performed successfully as a live act, demonstrating (I guess) that this is music that stands up to a variety of purposes.
The Open Directory Project site includes further information and links about Labradford.

Finding new music - how do you do it? Well recommendation is a great way, especially if you can then find ways of hearing the music. I found Labradford from a recommendation on an ambient music mailing list. A quick trawl on CDNow for a sample clip showed that this band might be promising. Then off to Napster (RIP) for a sample track download. Eureka! The Rest is history. Mind you, with some of the more obscure bands I have found that trying to actually get hold of CDs can be a little tricky. Luckily the web gives us access to a huge array of sources. Apparently there are a whole bunch of New Zealand(!) bands that also share post rock droning minimalist tendencies - sounds like a trawl through google to me! Have a look at some of my tips for finding music here. |
